7 Things That Contribute To Your Lack of Peace (And What To Do About It)

Feeling stressed, confused or “stuck” in life is lot like having too much furniture in your living room.

Imagine your living room is overcrowded with too much furniture, making it difficult to walk around in it without bumping into the coffee table or stubbing your toe on a chair.

In the same way, when your head is filled with worry, anxiety or head chatter, there isn’t enough room or “space” for the energy to flow, or for your intuition or inner guidance to show up!

Make some room and, wa-lah! Peace.

We typically think of “spring cleaning” in relationship to freshening up our yards or patios, cleaning windows from the winter crud, or clearing out our closets or garages of stuff that we’ve accumulated but no longer use.

In the literal sense, the physical clearing out of clutter, organizing your home or office space, and donating or throwing out things you no longer need, serves to re-energize you.

It feels really good, doesn’t it?! Yes! It feels fresh and new and if you pay attention, you can feel yourself taking a deep breath – because there’s more space; the energy is more free to move around.

A Different Form of Spring Cleaning

In the same way, your life needs a spring cleaning to clear out the stuff that can literally suck the energy right out of you. It can get in the way of you being able to connect to your spirit, your creativity, your sense of feeling grounded and connected.

The “stuff” I’m talking about is the things in your life that you are tolerating.

Just the other day I was in a coaching call with a client and she was telling me how she’s been tolerating not having an assigned parking space for her car.

Now, that may sound like no big deal, but for her, it has become a major impediment to the enjoyment of her life. She finds herself NOT doing the things she enjoys, like perhaps going out dancing at night, for fear she’ll return late at night to no parking available and have to walk many blocks in the dark to her home.

She literally has gotten to the point where she plans, or doesn’t plan, to do things around whether or not she’s willing to chance not having a parking space when she returns.

It has taken a huge toll on her life!

She’s applied, and been accepted, to move into a new building under construction that will have an assigned parking space. In the meantime we are discussing other ways she can work around that limitation like perhaps ride-sharing with a friend.

What’s Contributing To Your Lack Of Peace?

What are you tolerating?

Anything that you find yourself “putting up with”, or “biting your tongue” so as to not make waves, or trying your best to ignore, takes away from your energy reserves. Every time you encounter it there’s a part of you that silently utters (or perhaps even out loud!), “oh crud”.

Am I right? If you pay attention you’ll probably also note some sort of a physical reaction, perhaps a tightness in your gut, a deep sigh, etc.

What You Can Do To Create More Flow And Peace In Your Life

What can you do to create more peace and energy in your own life?

Here are some questions to consider. All of them are examples of the kinds of things that steal from your precious energy reserves leaving you more tired and less equipped to deal with other life issues that need your attention.

1. What are you procrastinating over?
2. What needs physically Spring Cleaning in your life? (eg. your office, filing, wardrobe, hairstyle, kitchen, garden)
3. What’s cluttering your mind?
4. What is zapping your energy? (eg. unresolved conflicts, unmade decisions, fears/worries, a lack of clarity)
5. In what areas of your life do you need to take a breath of fresh air?
6. What do you need to let go of and clear up so that you can spring forward?
7. In your life, what glares accusingly at you? (however big or small, if something glares at you it’s time to do something about it!)

How Do You Score?

To test yourself, I’ve created a simple Checklist for More Inner Peace where you can score yourself.

This is your chance to really raise your awareness of what is getting in your way. You don’t have to tackle it all at once. But I’m willing to bet that if you handle one of your biggest energy zappers, you’ll find you have this surge of energy to take on even more!

Pick one area, the area that’s your biggest “UGH”, and deal with it. Make a decision to take one action on it to move out of your sphere, if possible.
